REPRODUCING OPERATIONAL LANDSCAPES: The Rock Mining for Indonesia's New Capital City

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Indonesia's new capital city is designed to become a green and sustainable city. In this article, we examine the (un)sustainability of the process through which the city is coming into being. Using the sociospatial theory of planetary urbanization, we trace the dialectical relationship between the new city and sites beyond it to show how ...

Understanding flow characteristics from tsunami deposits at Odaka, Joban Coast, using a deep neural network (DNN) inverse model [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
The 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami inundated the Joban coastal area in the Odaka region of the city of Minamisoma, up to 2818 m from the shoreline. In this study, the flow characteristics of the tsunami were reconstructed from deposits using the DNN (deep ...

Numerical modeling of the 1964 Alaska tsunami in western Passage Canal and Whittier, Alaska [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2010
A numerical model of the wave dynamics in Passage Canal, Alaska during the <i>M</i>w 9.2 megathrust earthquake is presented. During the earthquake, several types of waves were identified at the city of Whittier, located

Microzoning Tsunami Hazard by Combining Flow Depths and Arrival Times

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
Tsunami hazard is typically assessed from inundation flow depths estimated from one or many earthquake scenarios. However, information about the exact time when such inundation occurs is seldom considered, yet it is crucial for pedestrian evacuation ...

The GeoClaw software for depth-averaged flows with adaptive refinement

open access: yes, 2011
Many geophysical flow or wave propagation problems can be modeled with two-dimensional depth-averaged equations, of which the shallow water equations are the simplest example.

Run-up characterstics of symmetrical solitary tsunami waves of unknown shapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The problem of tsunami wave run-up on a beach is discussed in the framework of the rigorous solutions of the nonlinear shallow-water theory. We present an analysis of the run-up characteristics for various shapes of the incoming symmetrical solitary ...

Early‐Life Disaster Exposure and the Investment Response to Monetary Policy

open access: yesFinancial Review, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We place CEOs' formative experiences at the center of analyzing how firms respond to monetary policy. Specifically, we examine how early‐life exposure to natural disasters shapes CEOs’ investment behavior following monetary shocks. CEOs with exposure to moderate natural disasters during their formative years exhibit stronger risk‐taking ...

Natural disaster risk salience and the strategic appointment of directors with sustainability expertise

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how salient sustainability risks from near‐miss natural disasters influence board composition. Using a difference‐in‐differences design, I find that firms located in counties neighboring disaster‐affected areas significantly increase the presence of directors with sustainability expertise following the disaster.

Development of biodegradable composite micro-perforated panel made from natural fibre composites with evaluation of its acoustic and mechanical properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Micro-perforated panel (MPP) has been widely considered as a promising alternative for sound absorption purposes. Plenty of research has been done to improve the sound absorption of MPP but no specific work highlights the material structure effect ...
