I this note we report preliminary work on a modification of the expansion tube. This modification is suggested by our experiences with secondary diaphragm breakage and its effect on flow quality. It appears that diaphragm fragment size significantly affects flow uniformity.

Chemical recombination in an expansion tube
AIAA Journal, 1994The note describes the theoretical basis of chemical recombination in an expansion tube which simulates energy, Reynolds number, and stream chemistry at near-orbital velocities. Expansion tubes can satisfy ground-based hypersonic propulsion and aerothermal testing requirements.

Effect of Expansion Ratio on Formability in Tube Drawing with Diameter Expansion
2021Conventional tube drawing methods have the disadvantage that thickness reduction in one pass is small. This paper proposed a tube drawing method for overcoming this disadvantage, and the method expands the diameter at the same time of drawing. Expansion tubes perform an important role in hypersonic flight research by providing a ground-based testing facility in which scale models can be tested at simulated flight conditions. Impurity Measurements in the Expansion Tube
1971An assessment is given on the importance of impurities in expansion tube flow, using the results of spectroscopic measurements. The expansion tube is a new type facility which produces high energy, high Mach number flows. It has been used at the Ballistic Research Laboratories for the study of nonequilibrium effects in high temperature gases.
