Stability of Offshore Tugboats

A review of available stability criteria, tugboat casualty data, and existing U. S. tugboat designs is made to recommend stability criteria for use in the design of offshore tugboats. Casualty data for all tugboat/towboat operations are presented, with breakdowns of offshore casualties and intact stability casualties.

This article contains a small bit of Naval and engineering history. The USS Hoga (YTB 146) played a significant role during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The 100 foot Navy tugboat fought fires on the Battleship Arizona and helped push the Battleship Nevada aground to avoid sinking and blocking the harbor channel.
