Tungro disebabkan oleh dua jenis virus yaitu virus batang (rice tungro bacilliform virus=RTBV) dan virus bulat (rice tungro spherical virus=RTSV). Kedua jenis virus tersebut hanya dapat ditularkan oleh wereng hijau secara semipersisten. RTBV merupakan virus dependen, sedangkan RTSV sebagai virus pembantu (helper virus).
