Malignant mesothelioma is a rare, often aggressive tumor of the tunica vaginalis. We report 2 cases and review the literature concerning current management strategies. It appears that, although adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy have little value, local and nodal recurrence may be successfully treated by local excision.

Mesothelioma in the tunica vaginalis of a bull
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 1988Bilateral mesothelioma in the tunica vaginalis of an 18-month-old bull is described. Differentiation from adenocarcinoma was based on ultrastructural features, particularly on the morphology of the microvilli and the presence of microfilaments. The aetiology of this neoplasm in the tunica vaginalis is not known.

Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis in a dog
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 1986A 12-year-old Scottish terrier had a scrotal mass which was diagnosed as a malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis. The tumour resulted in a rapidly fatal clinical course with direct extension into the peritoneal cavity via the inguinal canal; there were no haematogenous or lymphatic metastases.

It is a benign, fibroproliferative process with hyalinization and sometimes with focal calcification.
