In 1932 I suggested a graphic method of tuning fork audiometry. 1 The method was tedious and not based on a standardized scale of normal hearing. It was abandoned. In 1934 I devised the acoustimeter. This consisted of a series of calibrated tuning forks mounted on a revolving turret.

No one will deny that there is a demand for the standardization of the hearing tests when the unusual amount of literature that has appeared on the subject within the last few years is brought to mind. The day eventually will come when there are standards for hearing tests that are as useful and as familiar as those of the ophthalmologist.

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 1972Abstract The problem to find the natural frequencies and the appropriate modes of vibration of tuning-forks of quite general geometry is investigated. The tuning-fork is first discretized, and then the method of transfer matrices is applied. Numerical results are presented for three test examples to illustrate the accuracy of the method.
