Tunnel Boring Machines

Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, 2003
Tunneling in hard rock with tunnel boring machines is one of the most mechanized construction processes. Mechanization also applies to the installation of the temporary excavation support and the final lining. Computer-aided process systems have been developed, including: (1) sensor-supported gathering and computer-aided storage of all relevant tunnel ...

TUNNELS - TUNNEL BORING MACHINES.

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering, 1994
This paper begins by describing the requirements for the tunnelling machines used in the construction of the Channel Tunnel. Five machines were used, three on the marine tunnels and two on the land tunnels. The description is then developed, distinguishing between the types of machines working under the sea and those under land.

Tunnel boring machines under squeezing conditions

Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, 2010
Abstract Squeezing ground represents a challenging operating environment as it may slow down or obstruct TBM operation. Due to the geometrical constraints of the equipment, relatively small convergences of one or two decimetres may lead to considerable difficulties in the machine area (sticking of the cutter head, jamming of the shield) or in the ...

Tunnel Boring Machines

1996
Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are used to excavate tunnels in virtually all types of ground and under widely different physical conditions. This chapter covers hard and soft rock TBMs with full-face rotating heads and their development from soft ground shields.
