Soft Ground Tunnel Boring Machines

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1978
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Enviromental Controls, Transportation, Congested Living and Utility Requirements have necessitated that Engineers seriously consider underground installation as a solution. The advent of the Tunnel Boring Machine make these installations economically feasable.</div>

Instrumentation Strategies for Tunnel Boring Machines

Tunneling and Underground Construction, 2014
The loading on the tools of a TBM (tunnel boring machine) can usually only be estimated through the global thrust force, which gives a typical force of about 250 kN for 17''-discs. The actual loading, however, is highly variable with peak loads that can be many times the nominal load. In the present paper, the development and implementation of a method

Equipment: shields and tunnel boring machines

1993
The work undertaken at the face is critical to the jacking operation. The maintenance of ground stability, the speed of working, control of line and level and the safety of operatives are all related to the choice of shield or tunnel boring machine (TBM).

A model of tunnel boring machine performance

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 1992
A mathematical model for the performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is presented. In particular an equation for the TBM cutter wear is proposed. The rock mechanics are described via simple strength parameters and the Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI). Thus one obtains a complete description of TBM tunnelling with instantaneous and accumulated values

Performance calculation for tunnel boring machine motors

Conference Record of the 2000 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Thirty-Fifth IAS Annual Meeting and World Conference on Industrial Applications of Electrical Energy (Cat. No.00CH37129), 2002
The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is dependent upon the mine power distribution system providing adequate voltage. The voltage at the motors may be calculated using a standard computer load flow program. These calculated voltages are compared to measured voltages in the tunnel.
