The carpal tunnel

British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2005
The carpal bones are deeply convex anteriorly. This bony gutter is converted by the flexor retinaculum into a tube – the carpal tunnel, which conveys the median nerve, together with the long flexor tendons of the fingers and thumb, into the hand. It is of special interest to the surgeon because it is the site of a common nerve entrapment, the carpal ...

TUNNELS - TUNNEL BORING MACHINES.

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering, 1994
This paper begins by describing the requirements for the tunnelling machines used in the construction of the Channel Tunnel. Five machines were used, three on the marine tunnels and two on the land tunnels. The description is then developed, distinguishing between the types of machines working under the sea and those under land.

Control of Tunneling [PDF]

open access: possible, 1995
We study the conservative as well as the dissipative quantal dynamics in a harmonically driven, quartic double-well potential. In the deep quantal regime, we find coherent modifications of tunneling, including its complete suppression. In the semiclassical regime of the conservative system, the dynamics is dominated by the interplay of tunneling and ...

Theory of Tunneling

Journal of Applied Physics, 1961
The theory of ``direct'' and ``phonon-assisted'' tunneling is reviewed. Theoretical I–V characteristics are calculated using the constant field model. Generalizations to nonconstant field and more complicated band structure models are discussed briefly.

On Resonant tunneling

Surface Science Letters, 1982
Abstract Localized electron states in oxides adjacent to metals hybridize with conduction electron states forming interface states, which at the localized site have an amplitude resonantly enhanced over the amplitude of the conduction electron states.

Tunnel Vision on a Tunnel Mind A Critique and a Way Out

The computer metaphor invites views on mental, neural, and behavioral processes built around the input–output relations between an inner and an outer domain usually cast in terms of information processing. This metaphor also operates in ways that make the material constitution and context of these processes and domains less relevant.

Tunneling Into Superconductors

Physical Review Letters, 1962
The tunneling of electrons through a thin insulating layer between a normal and a superconducting metal is discussed. A previous derivation is examined to bring out the connection with the semiconductor model of a superconductor, and the quasi-particle excitations in normal and superconducting states are discussed.
