TUNNELS - TUNNEL BORING MACHINES.

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering, 1994
This paper begins by describing the requirements for the tunnelling machines used in the construction of the Channel Tunnel. Five machines were used, three on the marine tunnels and two on the land tunnels. The description is then developed, distinguishing between the types of machines working under the sea and those under land.

Channel-tunnels

Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 2001
TolC and its many homologues comprise an alpha-helical transperiplasmic tunnel embedded in the bacterial outer membrane by a contiguous beta-barrel channel, providing a large exit duct for diverse substrates. The 'channel-tunnel' is closed at its periplasmic entrance, but can be opened by an 'iris-like' mechanism when recruited by substrate-engaged ...

Tunnel Syndromes

2001
Presents each tunnel syndrome in a separate chapter and includes anatomy, etiology, clinical signs and symptoms, treatment, and references Stresses the importance of a thorough history and physical examination as the key to obtaining the correct diagnosis Provides an overview of the definition, anatomy, etiology, clinical symptoms and signs, and ...

Domino Tunneling

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2015
Matrix-isolation experiments near 3 K and state-of-the-art quantum chemical computations demonstrate that oxalic acid [1, (COOH)2] exhibits a sequential quantum mechanical tunneling phenomenon not previously observed. Intensities of numerous infrared (IR) bands were used to monitor the temporal evolution of the lowest-energy O-H rotamers (1cTc, 1cTt ...

Tunnelling time and tunnelling dynamics

International Reviews in Physical Chemistry, 2007
The concept of ‘tunnelling time’ in the context of quantum particle tunnelling is reviewed. Various suggestions of linking the tunnelling dynamics with a characteristic time (real or complex) like the phase time, barrier interaction time (bounce time), presence time, etc. are analysed. A simple but fully quantal method of defining and estimating a real

Tunnel Safety Concept Koralm Tunnel

Geomechanics and Tunnelling, 2008
AbstractThe 32.8 km long Koralm tunnel requires specific measures to guarantee a sufficient safety level. The methodology applied to define safety measures for this very long tunnel is on the one hand based on a set of guidelines and on the other hand based on the specific boundary conditions of this tunnel.

Photonic Tunneling Experiments: Superluminal Tunneling

1994
We report on microwave experiments with evanescent modes. The propagation of these “tunneling” modes appear to be instantaneous inside the barrier region independent of barrier length. Data were obtained from various potential barrier configurations and with two basically different measuring procedures.
