The structure of the tympanic region of the skull of Ptilocercus lowii was studied in an embryo of 30 mm crown-rump length and in 5 osteocrania. As in Tupaia, the anterior wall of the bulla of Ptilocercus is not completed by a tympanic process of the alisphenoid, contrary to earlier reports.

Journal of Mammalian Evolution, 2002
The eutherian orders Scandentia, Primates, Dermoptera, and Chiroptera have been grouped together by many morphologists, using various methods and data sets, into the cohort Archonta. Molecular evidence, however, has supported a clade (called Euarchonta) that includes Scandentia, Primates, and Dermoptera, but not Chiroptera.

The Nervous System of the Tupaiidae: Its Bearing on Phyletic Relationships
1980Evidence derived from studies of the brain of Tupaia by Sir Wilfrid Le Gros Clark played a major role in the acceptance of the classification of tupaiids as primates by many authorities (e. g. Simpson, 1945). Their current popularity as experimental subjects in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology has been a direct outgrowth of that status.
