Normally, there are three pairs of nasal turbinates in the nasal cavity. Coronal computed tomographies of 253 cases of sinusitis were examined for the presence of additional turbinates and bilateral secondary middle turbinates were detected in two cases.

Its arched central portion overhangs the so-called inferior meatus, which contains the opening of the nasolacrimal duct. The inferior turbinate is part of the nasal valve area, which is the narrowest part of the nose.

A MEDLINE literature search was performed for the years 1980 to 1996 using the following search strategy: sinus or sinuses AND endoscopic or endoscopy AND turbinate or turbinates. This search yielded 55 references, from which appropriate articles were chosen. The citations from each chosen article were also examined for appropriate references.
