Uncertainty analysis of turbine nozzle guide vane cooling performance. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS One
Conjugate heat transfer analysis plays an important role in the design of heavily cooled gas turbine vane or blade. In this study, the aerodynamic and heat transfer performance of the E3 engine nozzle guide vane is investigated through conjugate heat transfer analysis using ANSYS CFX software.

Ceramic Vane Demonstration in an Industrial Turbine [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 4: Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy; Ceramics; Structures and Dynamics; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; IGTI Scholar Award, 1997
A U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) program with the Allison Engine Company will demonstrate ceramic vanes in an industrial turbine. First-stage ceramic vanes and their metallic mounts are to be designed, fabricated, and operated in a relatively short-term engine test (up to 50 hr).

NASA Gas Turbine Stator Vane Ring [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 4: Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy; Ceramics; Structures and Dynamics; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Process Industries; General, 1981
AiResearch Casting Company has produced four monolithic stator vane rings from reaction-bonded silicon nitride. This paper describes the various steps involved: wax injection of stator vane patterns, precise fixturing of patterns, mold fabrication, slip preparation, casting, prenitriding, nitriding, and ceramic machining. Each process step is discussed

Direct Numerical Simulations of a High-Pressure Turbine Vane [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Turbomachinery, 2015
In this paper, we establish a benchmark data set of a generic high-pressure (HP) turbine vane generated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) to resolve fully the flow. The test conditions for this case are a Reynolds number of 0.57 × 106 and an exit Mach number of 0.9, which is representative of a modern transonic HP turbine vane.

EBFOG: Deposition, Erosion and Detachment on High Pressure Turbine Vanes

open access: yesVolume 2D: Turbomachinery, 2017
Fouling and erosion are two pressing problems that severely affect gas turbine performance and life. When aircraft fly through a volcanic ash cloud the two phenomena occur simultaneously in the cold as well as in the hot section of the engine. In the high pressure turbine, in particular, the particles soften or melt due to the high gas temperatures and

Aircraft Gas Turbine Blade and Vane Repair

open access: yesSuperalloys 1988 (Sixth International Symposium), 1988
The high replacement costs of aircraft gas turbine blades and vanes have created a fast-growing, highly-specialized segment of the aircraft repair industry. The economic rationale for repair in lieu of replacement is prima facie. The metallurgical rationale is less certain, but satisfactory flight performance over the past twenty-five years at least ...

Flutter in sectored turbine vanes

open access: yes, 2004
In order to eliminate or reduce vibration problems inturbomachines without a high increase in the complexity of thevibratory behavior, the adjacent airfoils around the wheel areoften mechanically connected together with lacing wires, tip orpart-span shrouds in a number of identical sectors.
