Prediction of low frequency and impulsive sound radiation from horizontal axis wind turbines [PDF]
Theoretical models to predict the radiation of low frequency and impulsive sound from horizontal axis wind turbines due to three sources: (1) steady blade loads; (2) unsteady blade loads due to operation in a ground shear; (3) unsteady loads felt by the ...

Numerical validation of the two-scale actuator disc theory for marine turbine arrays [PDF]
The challenge in the hydrodynamic modelling of tidal and marine turbine farms is to take into account the interaction of flow events across a wide range of scales, such as the blade scale, turbine scale, array scale and regional scale.

Analysis of turbulence and vortex structures by flow mapping [PDF]
The technique of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) flow mapping is reviewed and comparisons made with Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA). Results are presented showing the application of PlV to the determination of coherent structures in grid-generated ...

A contra-rotating marine current turbine on a flexible mooring : development of a scaled prototype [PDF]
The contra-rotating marine current turbine concept developed by the Energy Systems Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde is aimed at extracting energy in a wide range of water depths by 'flying' a neutrally-buoyant device from a flexible ...

The effects of atmospheric and wake turbulence on wind turbines and wind turbine wakes
Wind tunnel studies using model wind turbines have been used to investigate the effects and characteristics of neutral and unstable atmospheric boundary layers on their operation and wake behaviour. Wind turbine arrays have also been arranged to observe the effect of wake interaction.

Modelling turbulence in axisymmetric wakes: an application to wind turbine wakes
A novel fast-running model is developed to predict the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in axisymmetric wake flows. This is achieved by mathematically solving the partial differential equation of the TKE transport using the Green's function method.

Characterization of Flow Interactions in a One-Stage Shrouded Axial Turbine
The aim of this paper is to characterize the steady and unsteady flow interactions through a one-stage high-pressure (hp) shrouded axial turbine with a tip cavity.

Penn State axial flow turbine facility: Performance and nozzle flow field [PDF]
The objective is to gain a thorough understanding of the flow field in a turbine stage including three-dimensional inviscid and viscid effects, unsteady flow field, rotor-stator interaction effects, unsteady blade pressures, shear stress, and velocity ...
