Met Mast Measurements of Wind Turbine Wakes
2021This chapter addresses met mast measurements for wind turbine wake research, where we tackle the matter by posing and answering three questions. By asking ourselves what the value is of met mast measurements for wake/aerodynamic research, we describe how met masts can be and have been used in aerodynamic research, accompanied by a number of ...

Wind Turbine Near Wakes and Comparisons to the Wake Behind a Disc
43rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2005The wake development behind wind turbines affects power losses in turbine parks aswell as the flow induced rotor loads due to wake turbulence.

Three-dimensional free wake calculation of wind turbine wakes
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1988Abstract A numerical method has been developed for the computation of wake structure and development of horizontal axis wind turbines. The method uses the vortex particle concept which already has been used in order to compute three-dimensional unsteady inviscid flows around wings and helicopter rotors.

Unsteady Turbine Blade Wake Characteristics
Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2003, Parts A and B, 2003The paper presents an experimental investigation of large coherent structures, commonly referred to as “von Karman vortex street”, in the wake of a turbine blade at high subsonic Mach number (M2,is = 0.79) and high Reynolds number (RE = 2.8×106 and their effect on the steady and unsteady pressure and temperature distribution in the wake.

Anisotropy of turbulence in wind turbine wakes
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2005This work is mainly dedicated to the study of non-isotropic characteristics of turbulence in wind turbine wakes, specifically the shear layer of the near wake. A calculation method based on an explicit algebraic model for the components of the turbulent stress tensor is proposed, and the results are found to be in acceptable agreement with experimental

Transonic Turbine Vane Wake Flows
Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1996This paper summarizes the research on transonic turbine vane wake flows carried out in a Transonic Planar Cascade at the National Research Council of Canada between 1987 and 1995. The cascade used in the research is a large scale, continuously operating, inflow facility which was developed to study both flow phenomena and aerodynamics of turbine vanes.

Wake-Wake Interactions and its Potential for Clocking in a Transonic High Pressure Turbine
Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Marine; Turbomachinery; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery, 2001Two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes calculations of a transonic single stage high pressure turbine were carried out with emphasis on the flow field behind the rotor. Detailed validation of the numerical procedure with experimental data showed excellent agreement in both time-averaged and time-resolved flow quantities. The numerical time-step as well

Aerodynamics of wind turbine wakes
2009This report reviews the available literature on the aerodynamics of wind turbines and wind farms. Firstly, two introductory chapters are devoted to the physics of the flow around a wind turbine and the existing engineering models for blade and wake aerodynamics. The focus of this work is however on the numerical modeling of wakes.
