We investigate the non-linear equilibration of a two-layer quasi-geostrophic flow in a channel with an initial eastward baroclinically unstable jet in the upper layer, paying particular attention to the role of bottom friction. In the limit of low bottom friction, classical theory of geostrophic turbulence predicts an inverse cascade of kinetic energy ...

Aerodynamic generation of electric fields in turbulence laden with charged inertial particles
How lightning occurs in dusty atmospheres remains largely unknown because of the complexity of the turbulent flows involved. Di Renzo and Urzay reveal a flow-driven mechanism of charge separation by simulating turbulence laden with hundreds of millions ...

Unified energy law for fluctuating density wave orders in cuprate pseudogap phase
The origin of the pseudogap in the cuprates and how it is related to the mechanism of their superconductivity has been a topic of long standing debate. Here, the authors suggest that the pseudogap is governed by a unified energy law the basis for which ...

Statistical Properties of Turbulence: An Overview [PDF]
We present an introductory overview of several challenging problems in the statistical characterisation of turbulence. We provide examples from fluid turbulence in three and two dimensions, from the turbulent advection of passive scalars, turbulence in ...

Turbulence and holography [PDF]
We examine the interplay between recent advances in quantum gravity and the problem of turbulence. In particular, we argue that in the gravitational context the phenomenon of turbulence is intimately related to the properties of spacetime foam. In this framework we discuss the relation of turbulence and holography and the interpretation of the ...

Criteria of tracking vortex surfaces in turbulent-like flows
We propose criteria of tracking vortex surfaces in complex flows based on the vortex-surface field (VSF). The criteria characterize the accuracy and Lagrangian tracking performance of the numerical VSF solution, and determine the time period when the ...

Turbulent thermalization [PDF]
We study, analytically and with lattice simulations, the decay of coherent field oscillations and the subsequent thermalization of the resulting stochastic classical wave-field. The problem of reheating of the Universe after inflation constitutes our prime motivation and application of the results. We identify three different stages of these processes.
