Based on a new type of sensor mounted on a near-space balloon released in Hami, Xinjiang, the Thorpe method was used to analyze turbulence. The method was applied for the first time to northwest China (the mid-latitude region), and almost no radiosonde ...

Evolution of geometric structures in intense turbulence
We report measurements of the evolution of lines, planes, and volumes in an intensely turbulent laboratory flow using high-speed particle tracking. We find that the classical characteristic time scale of an eddy at the initial scale of the object considered is the natural time scale for the subsequent evolution.

Intense Reynolds-stress events in turbulent ducts
Abstract The aim of the present work is to investigate the role of intense Reynolds shear-stress events in the generation of the secondary flow in turbulent ducts. We consider the connected regions of flow where the product of the instantaneous fluctuations of two velocity components is higher than a threshold based on the long-time turbulence ...

Turbulence Intensity Modulation by Micropolar Fluids
Fluid microstructure nature has a direct effect on turbulence enhancement or attenuation. Certain classes of fluids, such as polymers, tend to reduce turbulence intensity, while others, like dense suspensions, present the opposite results.

Turbulence Intensity Similarity Laws For Turbulent Boundary Layers [PDF]
Turbulence intensity similarity laws, which are based on the attached eddy hypothesis, are tested with new high Reynolds number data obtained in the atmospheric surface layer. The existing formulation for the streamwise component was until now restricted to the log region and above.

Atmospheric Turbulence Effects on Wind-Turbine Wakes: An LES Study
A numerical study of atmospheric turbulence effects on wind-turbine wakes is presented. Large-eddy simulations of neutrally-stratified atmospheric boundary layer flows through stand-alone wind turbines were performed over homogeneous flat surfaces with ...

Turbulence intensity measurement in the wind tunnel used for airfoil flutter investigation
The paper reports on hot wire turbulence intensity measurements performed in the entry of a suction-type wind tunnel, used for investigation of flow-induced vibration of airfoils and slender structures.
