The role of turbulence in internal phosphorus release: Turbulence intensity matters

Environmental Pollution, 2019
Hydrodynamic fluctuations can trigger sediment suspension concomitantly with internal phosphorus release, while the interactive effect of turbulence mixing and sediment suspension on the regulation of phosphorus dynamics is in need of deep understanding.

Turbulent flow effects on NMR imaging: Measurement of turbulent intensity

Medical Physics, 1991
A general expression has been derived for the NMR signal from a fluid in steady but turbulent flow in a magnetic field gradient. The precise dependences of the spin echo amplitude on both flow and experimental parameters are described in terms of the temporal autocorrelation function for velocity fluctuations in the fluid.

Theorem of turbulent intensity and macroscopic mechanism of the turbulence development

Science in China Series D: Earth Sciences, 2007
Turbulence is one of the most common nature phenomena in everyday experience, but that is not adequately understood yet. This article reviews the history and present state of development of the turbulence theory and indicates the necessity to probe into the turbulent features and mechanism with the different methods at different levels.

Widespread Intense Turbulent Mixing in the Southern Ocean

Science, 2004
Observations of internal wave velocity fluctuations show that enhanced turbulent mixing over rough topography in the Southern Ocean is remarkably intense and widespread. Mixing rates exceeding background values by a factor of 10 to 1000 are common above complex bathymetry over a distance of 2000 to 3000 kilometers at depths greater than 500 to 1000 ...

The Turbulence Intensity of the Wind Bora

2018
The Bora is a cold and gusty wind which occurs along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and its hinterland. It is most commonly from the north or north-east direction and often achieves stormy strength. Due to the direct connection of the Bora and the complex terrain, the speed of the wind Bora is rapidly changing while crossing obstacles and the ...

Crossbeam intensity fluctuations in turbulence

Optical Engineering, 2014
Intensity fluctuations of a crossbeam are evaluated in weak atmospheric turbulence. A crossbeam is defined as two asymmetrical Gaussian beams oriented perpendicular to each other, and one of these beams is wider along the x-axis whereas the other beam is wider along the y-axis.

Impacts of Turbulence on Hurricane Intensity

2010
Abstract : Our recent studies have shown that hurricane boundary layer turbulence, which must be parameterized in the current-generation weather-prediction models, plays a significant role in controlling the hurricane intensity. We find that horizontal turbulence, particularly in the radial direction (i.e., towards or away from the hurricane center ...

Measuring intense rotation and dissipation in turbulent flows

Nature, 2003
Turbulent flows are highly intermittent--for example, they exhibit intense bursts of vorticity and strain. Kolmogorov theory describes such behaviour in the form of energy cascades from large to small spatial and temporal scales, where energy is dissipated as heat.
