Multifunctional Fluidic Units for Emergent, Responsive Robotic Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A multifunctional reconfigurable fluidic unit can be used as sensor, valve and actuator is presented. A unique configuration combines the features of the three components as a Responsive self‐oscillating actuator. The remarkable versatility of the fluidic unit is demonstrated by building different robots with the same fluidic units only by varying ...

Performance Assessment of Reynolds Stress and Eddy Viscosity Models on a Transitional DCA Compressor Blade

open access: yesAerospace, 2018
In the current work a detailed investigation and a performance assessment of two eddy viscosity and two Reynolds stress turbulence models for modelling the transitional flow on a double circular arc (DCA) compressor blade is presented.

On the decay of turbulence in plane Couette flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The decay of turbulent and laminar oblique bands in the lower transitional range of plane Couette flow is studied by means of direct numerical simulations of the Navier--Stokes equations.

Liquid Metal Microrobots for Magnetically Guided Transvascular Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid metal‐based microrobots combine magnetic steering, intrinsic X‐ray visibility and softness, to navigate blood vessels even against flow. Under clinically relevant magnetic fields, liquid metal microrobots roll along vessel walls, cross endothelial barriers, and accumulate in target tissues.

An Investigation of Parallel Post-Laminar Flow through Coarse Granular Porous Media with the Wilkins Equation

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Behaviour of flow resistance with velocity is still undefined for post-laminar flow through coarse granular media. This can cause considerable errors during flow measurements in situations like rock fill dams, water filters, pumping wells, oil and gas ...

Flow generated by radial flow impellers: PIV measurements and CFD simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been used to investigate the single phase and gas-liquid flow generated by a Scaba SRGT turbine.

A Review on Microreactor Design for Effective Fischer–Tropsch Process Intensification

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Design strategies for effective Fischer–Tropsch process intensification are summarized based on experimental and simulation experiences. Recommendations for catalyst loading of packed‐bed and wash‐coated microchannel, microtube, micromonolith, and microstructured reactors are discussed.

Modelling extreme concentration from a source in a turbulent flow over rough wall [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The concentration fluctuations in passive plumes from an elevated and a groundlevel source in a turbulent boundary layer over a rough wall were studied using large eddy simulation and wind tunnel experiment.

Lattice Structures for Bone Replacement: The Intersection of Bone Biomechanics, Lattice Design, and Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review outlines how understanding bone's biology, hierarchical architecture, and mechanical anisotropy informs the design of lattice structures that replicate bone morphology and mechanical behavior. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of orthopedic implants that incorporate such structures using a range of engineering materials ...
