DNS OF A TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER WITH SEPARATION
Proceeding of Second Symposium on Turbulence and Shear Flow Phenomena, 2001The present contribution reports on a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a turbulent boundary layer that undergoes separation due to the presence of a pressure gradient at a moderate Reynolds number. The variation of the free-stream velocity has been chosen according to an experiment of Kalter and Fernholz (The influence of free-stream turbulence on ...

Turbulent boundary layers: reality and myth
International Journal of Computing Science and Mathematics, 2007In this paper, we discuss several recent theoretical approaches to wall-bounded flows such as turbulent boundary layers and pipe flows. Specifically, the power law theories by Barenblatt and George and a higher-order approach proposed by Buschmann and Gad-el-Hak are discussed.

In this lecture I hope to bring together the two branches of turbulence studies, (1) the fundamental study of the physics and mathematics of turbulent flow and (2) the methods of calculating turbulent flow development which are used by aircraft designers and other fluid dynamicists. While it is entirely reasonable that aircraft designers should wish to

Compressible Turbulent Magnetohydrodynamic Boundary Layers
The Physics of Fluids, 1968A closed analytical model for compressible magnetohydrodynamic boundary layers is formulated by using transport equations for the turbulent fluctuations of species mass density, velocity, and temperature, and thus avoiding a priori relations between turbulent fluxes and mean flow quantities.

Shear Stress in a Turbulent Boundary Layer
Journal of Applied Physics, 1950The method initiated by Fediaevsky for evaluating the shear stress distribution in a turbulent boundary layer under the action of an adverse pressure gradient is improved upon. Use is made of a more suitable polynomial and boundary conditions which include the concept that the turbulence which produces the shear at any point has its origin at the ...

Turbulent Boundary Layer in Compressible Fluids
Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1951The continuity, momentum, and energy differential equations for turbulent flow of a compressible fluid are derived, and the apparent turbulent stresses and dissipation function are identified. A general formula for skin friction, including heat transfer to a flat plate, is developed for a thin turbulent boundary layer in compressible fluids with zero ...

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the simple case of the turbulent boundary layer in a constant pressure field and considers the complex problem of the effects of pressure gradients, and variable wall roughness. The concepts of boundary layer phenomena, in general, and turbulent boundary layers, in particular, have found application in a wide ...
