The Analytic Structure of Turbulent Flows

1984
The topics discussed include (i) the relation between the Painleve property and integrability, (ii) high-frequency intermittency and complex-time singularities, (iii) possible real singularities of the 3-D Euler equations and how they can traced by going into the complex domain, (iv) short time behaviour of non-linear PDE’s with entire initial data.

Coherent structures in turbulent flow

2007
It is customary to say that the problem of turbulence remains the outstanding challenge of fluid dynamics, but in fact the concerted efforts of many scientists and engineers over the years have led to a considerable body of useful knowledge. The three processes of cataloguing, curve fitting and 'postdicting' are well under control.

Vortex structures in turbulent flow

2000
Abstract It is an honour to be invited to lecture in this magnificent hall of the University of Edinburgh, where I was privileged to study mathematics and physics in the great era of Aitken, Edge, Schlapp, Kemmer and Nisbet. I matriculated here in 1953.

The structure of turbulence in shear flows [PDF]

open access: possible
This thesis describes several experiments designed to investigate the structure of fully developed turbulent pipe flow. Mathematical and computational theories describing bounded shear flows are reviewed together with some of the existing experimental data.

On the fine structure of turbulent flows

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1957
The turbulence produced by a multiplicity of small air jets has been investigated and comparisons are made with other turbulent flows. The eddy Reynolds number is large (Rλ = 250). The energy spectrum was measured, as well as the skewness and kurtosis of ∂u/∂x.

On the Turbulence Structure in Compressible Turbulent Isothermal Channel Flow

2004
Direct numerical simulations of isothermal channel flow, with Mach numbers ranging from M = 0.3 to M = 3 and Reynolds numbers ranging from Re τ = 180 to Re τ = 560 have been performed. Their statistical analysis shows that changes in the turbulent stress peak values are linked to the changes in the corresponding pressure strain components.
