Laser ignition energy for turbulent premixed hydrogen air jets
Combustion and Flame, 2022Abstract New measurements of laser ignition energy in flowing turbulent hydrogen air mixture jets are reported. Successful ignition occurs if the input by the ignition laser within the volume of laser absorption and the chemical energy released by the incipient reactions in this volume exceed the losses by conduction and radiation.

Optimal Combustion Phasing Control of a Turbulent Jet Ignition Engine
2018 Annual American Control Conference (ACC), 2018The thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines can be affected by many factors. Combustion phase is one of these factors and attracted many researchers interest. Different from the conventional spark ignition engines, the combustion phase in turbulent jet ignition (TJI) engines is influenced by more control variables in both the pre- and main ...

Numerical Simulation of Ignition Mechanism in the Main Chamber of Turbulent Jet Ignition System
Volume 2: Emissions Control Systems; Instrumentation, Controls, and Hybrids; Numerical Simulation; Engine Design and Mechanical Development, 2018The ignition mechanism of a lean premixed CHVair mixture by a hot turbulent jet issued from the pre-chamber combustion is investigated using 3D combustion CFD. The turbulent jet ignition experiments conducted in the rapid compression machine (RCM) at Michigan State University (MSU) were simulated.

Abstract In this paper, the combustion characteristics of premixed CH4-air and H2-air mixtures with different excess air coefficients ignited by hot jet or jet flame are investigated experimentally in a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). The small volume pre-chambers with different orifices (2 or 3 mm in diameter) in the passive or active pre-

Turbulent jet ignition assisted combustion in a rapid compression machine
Combustion and Flame, 2017Abstract Numerical simulations of turbulent jet ignition (TJI) and combustion in a rapid compression machine (RCM) are conducted by a hybrid Eulerian–Lagrangian large eddy simulation/filtered mass density function (LES/FMDF) computational model. TJI is a novel method for initiating combustion in ultra-lean mixtures and often involves one or several ...

A Numerical Study of the Effect of Hydrogen Fuelled Turbulent Jet Ignition Engine
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2022<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The modern solution of two-stage combustion, namely the Turbulent Jet Ignition, enables the combustion of ultra-lean mixtures. Thanks to this solution, it became possible to reduce fuel consumption and, at the same time, to increase the combustion process indicators (including ...

Experiments and modeling of a dual-mode, turbulent jet ignition engine
International Journal of Engine Research, 2019The dual-mode, turbulent jet ignition system is a promising combustion technology to achieve high diesel-like thermal efficiency at medium to high loads and potentially exceed diesel efficiency at low-load operating conditions. The dual-mode, turbulent jet ignition systems to date proved a high level of improvement in thermal efficiency compared to ...

Ignition in a transient turbulent jet of hot inert gas
Combustion and Flame, 1972The ignition mechanism described by Phillipsis applied to the ignition of a flammable fuel/air mixture by a transient jet of hot inert gas. Calculated minimum jet sizes for ignition for a number of fuels were compared with the maximum experlmental safe gap for a flameproof enclosure.

Numerical Study of Turbulent Jet Ignition in a Lean Premixed Configuration
Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, 2017Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a hot combustion product jet interacting with a lean premixed hydrogen-air coflow are conducted to fundamentally investigate turbulent jet ignition (TJI) in a three-dimensional configuration. TJI is an efficient method for initiating and controlling combustion in ultra-lean combustion systems.
