Fluid Dynamic Foundation of Turbulent Lubrication Theory

A S L E Transactions, 1964
A critical examination of Constantinescu's theory of turbulent fluid film lubrication has been undertaken. Several of its anomalies were traced to violations of certain well-established basic phenomena in turbulent shear flows. A new approach, which is free of some of these objections, has been made.

Methodology of Turbulence Parameter Correction in Water-Lubricated Thrust Bearings

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2019
Oil-lubricated bearings are widely used in high-speed rotating machines such as those found in automotive industries and aerospace. However, environmental issues and risk-averse operations are resulting in the removal of oil and the replacement of all sealed oil bearings with reliable water-lubricated bearings.

Numerical analysis of turbulent lubrication in plain full journal bearings

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 2013
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the turbulent thermohydrodynamic (THD) performance characteristics of an axially grooved finite journal bearing for a variety of simulated operating conditions.Design/methodology/approach – The set of governing equations consisting the Navier‐Stokes, turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate ...

Turbulence Input Parameters Correction Methodology in Water Lubricated Thrust Bearings

Volume 7B: Structures and Dynamics, 2018
Oil-lubricated bearings are widely used in high speed rotating machines such as those found in the aerospace and automotive industries. However, environmental issues and risk-averse operations are resulting in the removal of oil and the replacement of all sealed oil bearings with reliable water-lubricated bearings. Due to the different fluid properties

A Bulk-Flow Theory for Turbulence in Lubricant Films

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1973
The purpose of this study on the turbulent lubricant film is: 1 To give a brief outline of a new theory called bulk-flow theory; 2 To investigate to what extent results of theories based on law of wall and mixing length concept agree with the newly developed theory; 3 To provide a theoretical basis for the design of bearings lubricated by fluids of low

Turbulent Lubrication—Its Genesis and Role in Modern Design

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1974
Turbulence, a phenomenon well known in fluid flow, was first reported in journal bearings and thrust bearings in 1949. The observations were of higher torques and greater temperature rises than were expected from lower speed data. The transition from laminar behavior occurred at a Reynolds’ number corresponding to the predicted occurrence of Taylor ...

STUDY OF TAYLOR INSTABILITIES AND TURBULENCE IN LUBRICATING FILMS

1977
The development of the wavy mode of Taylor vortices in the flow between a rotating inner cylinder and a stationary outer cylinder has been investigated by visual observations using a stroboscopic technique and by inner cylinder torque measurements. Radius ratios of 0.874, 0.911, 0.950 and 0.975 have been tested for the concentric and eccentric cylinder
