A nonsequential turbulent mixing process
Physics of Fluids, 2010We study the relaxation of an initially segregated scalar mixture in a randomly stirred medium, aiming at describing the overall concentration distribution of the mixture, its shape, and its rate of deformation as it evolves toward uniformity. An ever dispersing mixture is realized by releasing a plume of scalar in a large scale, sustained turbulent ...

Turbulent Mixing in Stratified Fluids
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1991ion layer in the oceanic benthic boundary layer against the stratification of the lutocline, and the growth of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) due to the turbulent mixing at the tropopause. Such mixing processes are of importance in studying and controlling various biological activities and the dispersion of pollutants in the environment.

Abstract The pattern of flow in a tidal estuary is largely determined by the vertical transport of momentum and density due to turbulence. In a well-mixed estuary the turbulent mixing throughout the depth is dominated by turbulence associated with friction at the bed, although the effect of shear at mid-depth due to the density driven residual flow ...

On the geometry of turbulent mixing
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1999We investigate the temporal evolution of the geometrical distribution of a passive scalar injected continuously into the far field of a turbulent water jet at a scale d smaller than the local integral scale of the turbulence. The concentration field is studied quantitatively by a laser-induced- fluorescence technique on a plane cut containing the ...

In this paper, we study turbulent mixing with sprays using a low Mach number DNS code coupled with a Lagrangian solver. We investigate the impact of turbulence on the spray dispersion, and its consequence on the global vaporization rates of the whole spray.
