Poult enteritis and mortality syndrome (PEMS) is an acute, infectious intestinal disease of turkey poults, characterized by high mortality and 100% morbidity, that decimated the turkey industry in the mid-1990s. The etiology of PEMS is not completely understood.

Recently, pathogenesis studies, using genetically distinct turkey-origin reoviruses (TRVs), revealed that poults infected with certain TRV isolates had moderate to severe bursal atrophy, suggesting virus-induced immune dysfunction. In order to characterize the effect of TRV infection on the turkey immune system, classical assays were undertaken to ...

Efficacy of Five Commonly Used Disinfectants Against Turkey Arthritis Reovirus
Avian Diseases, 2015Since late 2009, an unusual problem of reovirus-related lameness has been seen in market-age tom turkeys in the upper Midwest area of the United States. In this study, we determined the efficacy of five commonly used disinfectants (Virocid, Keno X5, Synergize, One Stroke, and Tek Trol) against turkey arthritis reoviruses (TARVs). For comparison, turkey

A Multiplex RT-PCR for the Detection of Astrovirus, Rotavirus, and Reovirus in Turkeys
Avian Diseases, 2012This study was undertaken to develop and validate a multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) for simultaneous detection of avian rotavirus, turkey astrovirus-2 (TAstV-2), and avian reovirus. Primers targeting the conserved regions of NSP4 gene of avian rotavirus, polymerase gene of TAstV-2, and S4 gene of avian reovirus were ...

Retrospective Analysis of Turkey Arthritis Reovirus Diagnostic Submissions in Minnesota
Avian Diseases, 2019Turkey arthritis reovirus (TARV) causes tenosynovitis in turkeys, resulting in decreased profits for producers due to the increase in morbidity, mortality, and feed conversion ratio. There is limited information on TARV epidemiology, including the dynamics of diagnostic submissions to veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

Poult enteritis complex (PEC) is an economically important disease of young turkeys characterized by diarrhea, poor weight gain, and, in some cases, high mortality. Although PEC is considered to be a polymicrobial disease, numerous viruses, including turkey coronavirus (TCV), turkey astrovirus type 2 (TAstV-2), and avian reoviruses (ARVs), have been ...

Isolation and Characterization of an Enteric Reovirus Causing High Mortality in Turkey Poults
Avian Diseases, 1972SUMMARY An enteric virus was isolated from several commercial flocks of 4-to-6-week-old turkey poults with about 30% mortality. No gross pathological lesions were observed in either sick or dead birds. Pathogenicity of the isolant was established by transmission studies with both intestinal filtrate and cell-culture material.

Quantitation of Intestinal d-Xylose Absorption in Normal and Reovirus-Inoculated Turkeys
Avian Diseases, 1984A micromethod was modified to quantitate intestinal D-xylose absorption in young and extremely small birds. This test was performed in control and cloned-reovirus-inoculated turkey poults to investigate intestinal absorptive function. Absorption peaks and curves for control poults closely resembled those observed in normal humans. Poult groups absorbed
