Hematocrit and Protein Concentration of Black Vulture and Turkey Vulture Blood

Condor, 1988
Blood protein concentration and hematocrit (packed cell volume) values are easily obtained and can be useful in determining the health of trapped or captive birds (Hunter and Powers 1980, Duke and Redig 1984). However, if these parameters are to be useful, there must be baseline data for comparison.

Temperature Regulation in Turkey Vultures

The Condor, 1988
Temperature regulation by six Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) was studied at ambient temperatures (Ta) from 11 to 400C in a metabolic chamber. Within this range body temperature varied little, averaging 39.70C, and the ratio of CO2 production to 02 consumption averaged 0.76. The thermal-neutral zone (TNZ) extended from 26 to 400C.

Nitrogen Excretion by Turkey Vultures

The Condor, 1980
-The proportions of nitrogen (N), as urate-N (76.1%), NH3-N (16.4%), and urea-N (7.5%) in the urine of fasted Turkey Vultures, are similar to those found in the urine of domestic chickens and ducks, the only other birds for which comparable data are available. Vultures show an adaptive increase in the percentage of urinary N excreted as urate (up to 86.

Peripheral neuropathy in a turkey vulture with lead toxicosis

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1999
Clinical, electromyographic, and pathologic findings characteristic of lead toxicosis were detected in a turkey vulture (Cathartes aura). The bird had generalized lower motor neuron dysfunction that progressed over 5 days. Electromyography revealed diffuse denervation potentials and a presumed decrement in the sciatic-tibial nerve conduction velocity ...

Flight Feather Molt of Turkey Vultures

The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, 2010
Abstract We document the molt sequence of flight feathers in Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) based on studies of captive and wild birds, and examination of museum specimens. We found an unusual pattern of primary replacement, which appears to be a modified form of Staffelmauser, or stepwise wing molt.
