Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Association between the location of Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) providers and heroin-related ambulance attendances

open access: yesSubstance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy
Introduction Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is an evidence-based intervention that reduces harms associated with heroin use. Ambulance services often serve as the first point of contact for people experiencing these acute harms.

‘We don’t live in a harm reduction world, we live in a prohibition world’: tensions arising in the design of drug alerts

open access: yesHarm Reduction Journal, 2023
Background Drug alerts designed for health and community workforces have potential to avert acute harms associated with unpredictable illicit drug markets, by preparing workers to respond to unusual drug-related events, and distribute information to ...

Turning Points and Eigenvalue Problems

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 1996
The periodic boundary value problem for a linear O.D.E. \(\ddot x + \alpha \dot x + ({2 \pi \over T})^2x = \lambda f(t) x\) \((0 \leq t \leq T)\), \(x(0) = x(T)\), \(\dot x(0) = \dot x(T)\), with spectral parameter \(\lambda\) is studied. Here a damping coefficient \(\alpha \neq 0\) and a smooth \(T\)-periodic function \(f \neq 0\) are given, the ...

Parameter Estimation and Prediction of COVID-19 Epidemic Turning Point and Ending Time of a Case Study on SIR/SQAIR Epidemic Models

open access: yesComput. Math. Methods Medicine, 2020
In this paper, the SIR epidemiological model for the COVID-19 with unknown parameters is considered in the first strategy. Three curves (S, I, and R) are fitted to the real data of South Korea, based on a detailed analysis of the actual data of South ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

“I was worried if I don’t have a broken leg they might not take it seriously”: Experiences of men accessing ambulance services for mental health and/or alcohol and other drug problems

open access: yesHealth Expectations, 2019
Background A large proportion of ambulance callouts are for men with mental health and/or alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, but little is known about their experiences of care.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Affected family members’ experience of, and coping with, aggression and violence within the context of problematic substance use: a qualitative study

open access: yesBMC Psychiatry, 2017
Background Families have an important role supporting a family member with problematic substance use (PSU), although this can often be challenging and confronting.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.
