Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Dynamic derailment simulation of an empty wagon passing a turnout in the through route

open access: yesVehicle System Dynamics, 2020
Turnouts are among the weakest links of railway lines, but the derailment risk of vehicles passing the through route of a turnout is seldom considered. The potential factors affecting derailment are screened according to field investigations of a train ...

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Measurement of the Geometric Center of a Turnout for the Safety of Railway Infrastructure Using MMS and Total Station

open access: yesItalian National Conference on Sensors, 2020
The turnouts in railway infrastructure constitute bottlenecks, limiting the capacity of the entire railway network. These turnouts force speed limits due to their design and geometry.

Nonprofit Messaging and the 2020 Election: Findings from a Nonpartisan Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) Field Experiment

open access: yesNonprofit Policy Forum, 2022
A distinct problem for American democracy is that voter participation rates remain higher among older, wealthier, and more highly educated citizens. Through their nonpartisan get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts, nonprofit organizations can help to remedy the

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Bias in Self-reported Voting and How it Distorts Turnout Models: Disentangling Nonresponse Bias and Overreporting Among Danish Voters

open access: yesPolitical Analysis, 2019
Most nonexperimental studies of voter turnout rely on survey data. However, surveys overestimate turnout because of (1) nonresponse bias and (2) overreporting.

Precipitation Simulations of the O‐Phase in Ti2AlNb Alloys Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Simulated and experimental evolution of the O‐phase volume fraction during postprocessing of a Ti‐21Al‐25Nb (at.%) alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion. With results of sensitivity to input parameters from a thorough and quantified analysis, the interfacial energy matrix/precipitate is the most relevant input parameter for the simulation of the O‐

Party Positions, Income Inequality, and Voter Turnout in Canada, 1984-2015

open access: yesAmerican Behavioral Scientist, 2020
Scholars have focused on the relationship between income inequality and voter turnout cross-nationally and within the United States. However, rising inequality and declining turnout has afflicted Canada to a greater extent than most other Western ...

Sward and milk production response to early turnout of dairy cows to pasture in Finland

open access: yesAgricultural and Food Science, 2008
The timing of turnout is an important factor affecting the grazing management of dairy cows. However, its consequences are not well known in the short grazing season of northern Europe.
