Group‐Specific Variation in Heterodyne Frequencies of Biphonic Calls in Resident (R‐Type) Killer Whales Orcinus orca ater

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Biphonation—the simultaneous production of two independent fundamental frequencies within a single vocalization—is a prominent feature of killer whale calls, yet the factors influencing the presence and intensity of heterodyne frequencies, which arise from interactions between these fundamentals, remain poorly understood. We analyzed long‐term

Comprehension of signs by dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Psychology, 2001
The authors assessed the ability of 6 captive dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to comprehend without explicit training 3 human communicative signs (pointing, directed gaze, and replica). Pointing consisted of indicating the target item with the index finger and a fully extended arm.

INTRACEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE IN A BOTTLENOSED DOLPHIN (Tursiops truncatus) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 1977
A neurologic condition closely resembling a common human disease, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, is described in a captive dolphin. Motor deficits and the possibiltiy that behavioral changes resulted in the animal's being attacked and driven off by its herdmates, are discussed in terms of damage resulting from the hemorrhagic lesion.

A case study of monofilament line entanglement in a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus): entanglement, disentanglement, and subsequent death

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2020
Background Free-ranging common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) can become entangled in fishing line and other marine debris. Infrequently, dolphins can be successfully disentangled, released back into the wild, and later examined postmortem to ...

Assessment of animal management and habitat characteristics associated with social behavior in bottlenose dolphins across zoological facilities.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Bottlenose dolphins are a behaviorally complex, social species that display a variety of social behaviors. Because of this, it is important for zoological facilities to strive to ensure animals display species-appropriate levels of social behavior.

Genetic Identification and Population Assignment of Extralimital Sightings of Hector's Dolphins

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Genetic identification from extralimital sightings can determine whether an individual comes from a small or large population, with conservation implications. Such is the case for the endangered Hector's and critically endangered Māui dolphins of Aotearoa/New Zealand. We compare the success of three opportunistic sampling methodologies (biopsy,

Bottlenose dolphin habitat and management factors related to activity and distance traveled in zoos and aquariums.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
High-resolution non-invasive cetacean tagging systems can be used to investigate the influence of habitat characteristics and management factors on behavior by quantifying activity levels and distance traveled by bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus ...
