Resting behaviors of captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Physiology & Behavior, 2003
In order to specify the resting behaviors in captive bottlenose dolphin, we quantitatively analyzed behavior of 16 dolphins in three aquariums in Japan. We observed their behaviors in the low-activity time (0 a.m.-3 a.m.), assuming that the resting behaviors would be most prominent and abundant at this time.

Tursiops truncatus (Bottle-nosed dolphin)

1973
One pair of the small acrocentric autosomes actually has a short second arm. This pair is arranged at the right side of the second row in these karyotypes.

Bisalbuminemia in a bottlenosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

Experientia, 1979
Bisalbuminemia was found in a female bottlenosed dolphin (Turiops truncatus) on routine examination. There is no association with disease.

Hepatitis E virus in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus

Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2017
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infects several animal species that act as zoonotic reservoirs for viral transmission. Solid and liquid residues from infected animals could lead to HEV contamination of food and surface waters. Evidence of human HEV infection through ingestion of seafood (shellfish, mussels) has been reported.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF THE BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN (TURSIOPS TRUNCATUS)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2006
Safe and effective echocardiography would represent a valuable tool for marine mammal veterinarians and physiologists evaluating the dolphin heart. Unfortunately, conventional ultrasound technology (transthoracic echocardiography) has been limited by logistic, anatomic, and behavioral challenges.

Human Lymphocyte Agglutinins in Tursiops Truncatus (Bottlenose Dolphin)

Immunological Communications, 1983
A naturally occurring heterophile agglutinin directed against human erythrocytes and lymphocytes is present in the serum of the marine mammal, Tursiops truncatus (Bottlenose dolphin). Differential specificity was demonstrated with the use of absorption techniques that showed at least 3 separate specificities directed against erythrocytes, T cells, and ...

Blubber development in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Journal of Morphology, 2003
AbstractBlubber, the lipid‐rich hypodermis of cetaceans, functions in thermoregulation, buoyancy control, streamlining, metabolic energy storage, and locomotion. This study investigated the development of this specialized hypodermis in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) across an ontogenetic series, including fetuses, neonates, juveniles ...

Toxoplasmosis in Atlantic Bottle-Nosed Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1990
A female Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and her calf were found beached on Picnic Island in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. Despite therapy the animals died. Necropsy revealed severe pneumonia and lymphadenopathy in the mother and the calf, gastric ulcers and infection with the stomach digenean Braunina cordiformis in the mother, and a ...

Anesthesia for the Bottlenose Dolphin, Tursiops truncatus

Science, 1964
Anesthetics can be administered to the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus by means of special ventilating equipment and intubation techniques. Nitrous oxide has been administered successfully on six occasions, and has produced definite signs of anesthesia.
