Experimental study on characteristics of vortex-induced vibration of a twin-box girder and damping effects

open access: yesJournal of Fluids and Structures, 2021
Abstract To investigate the characteristics of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the twin-box girder, we carried out the VIV wind tunnel tests. The VIV of the twin-box girder occurs in the range of 4.680 ≤ U r ≤ 6.113, with the maximum dimensionless VIV displacement RMS(y)/D=0.03308 at reduced velocity at U r = 5 .

Field measurement and wind tunnel study of aerodynamic characteristics of twin-box girder

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2020
Abstract To investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-box girder, the Xihoumen suspension bridge with a main span of 1650 m, was selected as the research object in this study. The wind field characteristics and the wind pressure distribution on the girder surface were analyzed by comparing the field measurements and wind tunnel tests for

Effects of attachments on aerodynamic characteristics and vortex-induced vibration of twin-box girder

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2018
Abstract An experimental investigation was carried out on the effects of attachments on the aerodynamic characteristics and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a twin-box girder. In the study, the flow pattern, pressure distribution, vortex shedding frequency, and VIV of five models, namely Model A (twin-box girder without attachments), Model B (twin ...

A numerical investigation of Reynolds number sensitivity of flow characteristics around a twin-box girder

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2018
Abstract A numerical investigation of Reynolds number sensitivity on flow past a twin-box girder was performed using large eddy simulation (LES) with Reynolds numbers of 1e2 ≤ Re ≤ 1e7. The simulation results reveal that the flow characteristics around the twin-box girder show different Reynolds number sensitivity according to the flow region and the

Reynolds number effects on aerodynamic characteristics and vortex-induced vibration of a twin-box girder

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2014
Abstract An experimental investigation of Reynolds number effects on aerodynamic characteristics and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a twin-box girder was performed. The Reynolds number is in the range of 5.85×10 3 ≤Re≤1.12×10 5 when using the central height of the twin-box girder as the characteristic length.

Experimental studies on VIV performance and countermeasures for twin-box girder bridges with various slot width ratios

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2016
The slot width ratio of a twin-box girder plays an important role in the aerodynamic performance of the corresponding bridge. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the VIV performance of a twin-box girder with various slot width ratios and evaluate the effectiveness of present VIV countermeasures considering the influence of different slot width ...

Benefits and Challenges of the Twin-box Bridge Girder

IABSE Congress Reports, 2022
<p>The aerodynamics of the twin-box bridge is considered to highlight the reasons for making this type of bridge deck superior to the conventional trapezoidal mono-box for suspension bridges having span lengths longer than 1800 m. The paper proposes a simple theoretical model yielding physical insight into the flutter stability and presents a ...
