Budget deficit persistence and the twin deficits hypothesis [PDF]
Abstract This paper gauges the twin deficits hypothesis, i.e. a positive causal relationship between the external and budget deficits. This relationship is measured by the responses of the external deficit to changes in the budget deficit induced by Blanchard's model.

Twin Deficits: Apparition or Reality?
Applied Economics, 2002This paper uses cointegration and multicointegration analysis to explore the issue of twin deficits for the USA in the post-World War II period. The results suggest that prior to 1974 the systems of fiscal and foreign sector variables exhibit multicointegration.

This test allows one not only to examine the general validity of twin deficits hypotheses, but also to predict future Korean external balance positions.

FURTHER ANALYSIS OF THE TWIN DEFICITS
Contemporary Economic Policy, 1992In a 1989 Contemporary Policy Issues article Miller and Russek published findings of a causal relation between the fiscal deficit and the trade deficit. My message in this chapter is that deficits can be good for you. In fact, deficits can be too large, and they can be too small. But we cannot tell which until we know how to measure them. And most people talking about deficits really have no notion how they are measured. The fact is that the way we do measure them has very uncertain economic relevance,

Twin deficits, twenty years later [PDF]
Recent declines in the U.S. current account and fiscal balances have sparked renewed debate over the twin-deficit hypothesis, which argues that a larger fiscal deficit, through its effect on national saving, leads to an expanded current account deficit. This study reviews international evidence on the hypothesis, finding some support for it.
