Wet Granulation in a TwinâScrew Extruder: Implications of Screw Design
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2010Wet granulation in twin-screw extrusion machinery is an attractive technology for the continuous processing of pharmaceuticals. The performance of this machinery is integrally tied to its screw design yet little fundamental knowledge exists in this emerging field for granulation to intelligently create, troubleshoot, and scale-up such processes.

Twin-screw melt granulation: Current progress and challenges
International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2020Twin-screw melt granulation (TSMG) is a new alternative method for granulation that offers several advantages over wet and dry granulation methods. TSMG has rapidly gained interest over recent years in the pharmaceutical industry. Since it is an inherently continuous process with controlled temperature and shear history, TSMG produces products with ...

Impact of screw elements on continuous granulation with a twin-screw extruder
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2008The influence of different screw element types on wet granulation process with a twin-screw extruder was investigated. Lactose granules were prepared with different screw configurations such as conveying, combing mixer and kneading elements. The use of kneading blocks led to an almost complete agglomeration of lactose, whereas kneading and combing ...

This study aimed to transfer a high shear granulation (HSG) process to a twin-screw granulation (TSG) process while maintaining equivalent dissolution profiles. Ibuprofen (IBP) was used as poorly soluble model drug.

Comparison of two twin-screw extruders for continuous granulation
European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, 2009A comparison was made between two twin-screw extruders (APV Baker and Leistritz Micro) used for continuous wet granulation. Both extruders had similar screw configurations, based on the length-to-diameter ratio of the screws, existing out of a conveying zone of 20 D, i.e. 20 times the screw diameter and a granulation zone of 4D.

Continuous twin screw granulation: Robustness of lactose/MCC-based formulations.
International journal of pharmaceutics, 2020In recent years, significant progress has been made in the field of continuous twin screw granulation. However, only limited knowledge is currently available on the impact of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) properties on granule quality and ...

A breakage kernel for use in population balance modelling of twin screw granulation
, 2020This paper presents a novel breakage kernel for use in population balance modelling for twin screw granulation (TSG) using mechanistic understanding in different screw elements. Breakage-isolated experiments are conducted using conveying and distributive
