Is Small Perfect? Size Limit to Defect Formation in Pyramidal Pt Nanocontacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We report high resolution transmission electron microscopy and ab initio calculation results for the defect formation in Pt nanocontacts (NCs). Our results show that there is a size limit to the existence of twins (extended structural defects).

Chondrocyte Differentiation of Human Endometrial Gland-Derived MSCs in Layered Cell Sheets

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
Recently, regenerative medicine using engineered three-dimensional (3D) tissues has been focused. In the fields of cell therapy and regenerative medicine, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attractive autologous cell sources.

Sodium doping in brookite TiO2 enhances its photocatalytic activity

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2022
We report in this work that sodium doping of brookite TiO2 effectively enhances its photocatalytic activity, which becomes three times higher than that of the quasi-spherical brookite TiO2.

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Jealous Twins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This tale treats competition within the family and, in particular, betrayal among brothers. It explores the contradiction inherent in peer-relationships within the family: siblings from the same mother/parentage (here epitomized by twins) are ...

The twin paradox in compact spaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Twins travelling at constant relative velocity will each see the other's time dilate leading to the apparent paradox that each twin believes the other ages more slowly.

Erratum: Neuroblastoma in monozygotic twins – a case of probable twin to twin metastasis [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Cancer, 2001
Concordance for neuroblastoma in monozygotic twins has been reported only rarely, and the cause of the shared pathology has not been established. We describe a case of infant monozygotic twins developing tumours that were morphologically, clinically and molecularly indistinguishable, but with a delay of 6 months between times of presentation.

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Probing dense matter in neutron stars with axial w-modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We study the problem of extracting information about composition and equation of state of dense matter in neutron star interior using axial w-modes. We determine complex frequencies of axial w-modes for a set of equations of state involving hyperons as ...
