Twist as a Probe for Phase Structure
Physica Scripta, 1981Summary: We advocate the use of twist as an efficient tool, in computer simulated lattice gauge theories, for quick scan of phase diagrams and for determining phase structure. Physically, a twist is an excitation induced by a specific dislocation (`twisted boundary condition') in the system.

Quasicrystallinity in twist-grain-boundary phases
Physical Review Letters, 1991We present a simplified polymer model for twist-grain-boundary phases in liquid crystals. The thermodynamic phases or this model are characterized by an angle 2πα. There are incommensurate phases with a an irrational number and commensurate phases with α=P/Q, with P and Q relatively prime integers. The latter have quasicrystalline symmetry for Q=5 or Q>

Helical Twisting Power of Induced Twisted Smectic C* Phases
Berichte der Bunsengesellschaft für physikalische Chemie, 1987AbstractThe helically structured cholesteric and smectic C* phases have been induced by chiral guest molecules in liquid crystalline host systems exhibiting nematic as well as Scphases. The helical twisting power δ has been measured for those systems: i) In all cases values of δchol> δc*were obtained; ii) in the induced Sc* but not in the ...

Investigation of a Twisted Phase between the Cholesteric and the Smectic A Phase
Crystal Research and Technology, 1996AbstractIn a ternary mixture of two liquid crystals and a non‐mesomorphic chiral dopant an intermediate state with an unusual texture was found between the cholesteric and the SA phase which could be identified as a separate twisted mesophase. The reflection wavelength of this mesophase does not change with temperature whereas the transmission of ...

The five-phase twisted-ring counter circuit
10th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems, 2003. ICECS 2003. Proceedings of the 2003, 2004The behavior of the Five-Phase Twisted-Ring Counter (5P-TRC) circuit is analyzed. The circuit produces five individual phased clock signals that exercise a phase difference equal to the half period of the clock. A tree-like structure is built by applying the phased outputs of the circuit to the clock inputs of five replicas of the circuit in order to ...
