Atomic excitation by a pulse train I: two-level atoms
Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1990An assembly of ground-state two-level atoms with a Maxwellian velocity distribution is considered to be illuminated by a near-resonant train of Gaussian pulses whose pulse separation is of the same order of magnitude as the natural decay time of the upper state by spontaneous emission.

Quantum Principles of Two-Level Atomic Spectroscopy
2003Until very recently a single atom interacting with an electromagnetic field could only be a topic of theoretical consideration because experimentally only ensembles of atoms were accessible. Atomic spectra and the probabilities of transitions in atoms had been successfully studied in atomic ensembles for a long time.
