A variational approach to optimal two‐stage designs

Statistics in Medicine, 2019
Recalculating the sample size in adaptive two‐stage designs is a well‐established method to gain flexibility in a clinical trial. Jennison and Turnbull (2015) proposed an “optimal” adaptive two‐stage design based on the inverse normal combination test, which minimizes a mixed criterion of expected sample size under the alternative and conditional power.

Optimization of Aortic Arch Replacement: Two-Stage Approach

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2007
Aneurysms of the aortic arch seldom occur alone. They usually involve the ascending aorta. Occasionally, the aneurysm also involves the descending thoracic or thoracoabdominal aorta. We advocate a staged approach for repair of these extensive aortic aneurysms, with the ascending and arch generally being repaired in the first stage and the descending ...

A two-stage coevolution approach for constrained optimization

Proceedings of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference Companion, 2017
In this paper, a coevolution approach with two stages is proposed for constrained optimization problems (COPs). At the first stage, the approach enters the feasible region rapidly by utilizing the feasibility rule with incorporation of objective function information (FROFI), which is an effective method for the balance between constraints and objective

A two-stage approach for structural topology optimization

Advances in Engineering Software, 1999
Abstract This paper proposes a two-stage optimization algorithm for topology optimization based on the homogenization method. The multistage approach aims to increase the stability and overall efficiency of homogenization-based topology optimizations. The homogenization method employed in this study uses a material constraint, which seeks the optimal

A Two-Stage Approach for Optimizing Simulation Experiments

CIRP Annals, 1993
Summary Simulation experiments involve many parameters (factors) not all of which significantly effect system performance. This paper proposes the application of Taguchi method prior to optimization, to reduce the number of experiments using orthogonal array design, and to determine the significant factors though sensitivity analysis.
