A two-stage coevolution approach for constrained optimization
Proceedings of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference Companion, 2017In this paper, a coevolution approach with two stages is proposed for constrained optimization problems (COPs). At the first stage, the approach enters the feasible region rapidly by utilizing the feasibility rule with incorporation of objective function information (FROFI), which is an effective method for the balance between constraints and objective

Optimization of Aortic Arch Replacement: Two-Stage Approach
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2007Aneurysms of the aortic arch seldom occur alone. They usually involve the ascending aorta. Occasionally, the aneurysm also involves the descending thoracic or thoracoabdominal aorta. We advocate a staged approach for repair of these extensive aortic aneurysms, with the ascending and arch generally being repaired in the first stage and the descending ...

A Two-Stage Approach for Optimizing Simulation Experiments
CIRP Annals, 1993Summary Simulation experiments involve many parameters (factors) not all of which significantly effect system performance. This paper proposes the application of Taguchi method prior to optimization, to reduce the number of experiments using orthogonal array design, and to determine the significant factors though sensitivity analysis.

Optimal multi-level thresholding using a two-stage Otsu optimization approach
Pattern Recognition Letters, 2009Otsu's method of image segmentation selects an optimum threshold by maximizing the between-class variance in a gray image. However, this method becomes very time-consuming when extended to a multi-level threshold problem due to the fact that a large number of iterations are required for computing the cumulative probability and the mean of a class.

A two-stage optimization approach to the asynchronous multi-sensor registration problem
2017 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2017An important step in multi-sensor data fusion is sensor registration, namely, to estimate sensors' range and azimuth biases from their asynchronous measurements. Assuming the target moves in a straight line with an unknown constant velocity, we propose a two-stage nonlinear least square (LS) approach to this problem. More specifically, in stage I, each

Abstract Unsupervised feature selection (UFS) is utilized in various application domains, such as data mining, pattern recognition, machine learning, etc. UFS follows three basic approaches, namely filter, wrapper, and hybrid (that is, a combination of both filter and wrapper) to select the relevant and non-redundant features.

Supermodularity in Two-Stage Distributionally Robust Optimization [PDF]
In this paper, we solve a class of two-stage distributionally robust optimization problems that have the property of supermodularity. We exploit the explicit worst case expectation of supermodular functions and derive the worst case distribution for the ...

A Two Stage Optimization Approach for Calibrating Water Distribution Systems
Water Distribution Systems Analysis 2010, 2011BWCN is a competition for calibrating pipe roughness coefficients and demand pattern multipliers of CTown Water Distribution System (WDS) to measured SCADA (hourly tank levels and pump flows) and fire flow test data in a 1-week operation. In a pre-calibration step, quality of the data is assessed, base demands for the fire flow tests are estimated, by ...

A two-stage optimization approach for sulphur emission regulation compliance
Maritime Policy & Management, 2016ABSTRACTIn this paper, we present a two-stage optimization model for the machinery system selection problem. The objective is to minimize total cost, while aggregated power requirement and emission regulations are constraining the problem. Future fuel prices are considered to be uncertain.
