Decomposition approaches for two-stage robust binary optimization

open access: yes, 2019
In this talk, we study a class of two-stage robust binary optimization problems with polyhedral uncertainty set where recourse decisions are restricted to be mixed-binary and uncertainty is present only in the objective function. We present a deterministic equivalent formulation for these problems through convexification of the recourse feasible region.

Multi-Objective Optimization of a Two-Stage Helical Gearbox Using Taguchi Method and Grey Relational Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
This paper presents a novel approach to solve the multi-objective optimization problem designing a two-stage helical gearbox by applying the Taguchi method and the grey relation analysis (GRA).

Large-Scale Convex Optimization for Dense Wireless Cooperative Networks

open access: yes, 2015
Convex optimization is a powerful tool for resource allocation and signal processing in wireless networks. As the network density is expected to drastically increase in order to accommodate the exponentially growing mobile data traffic, performance ...

Recurrent Saliency Transformation Network: Incorporating Multi-Stage Visual Cues for Small Organ Segmentation

open access: yes, 2018
We aim at segmenting small organs (e.g., the pancreas) from abdominal CT scans. As the target often occupies a relatively small region in the input image, deep neural networks can be easily confused by the complex and variable background.

Two-Sided Matching with Bounded Rationality: A Stochastic Framework for Personnel Selection

open access: yesMathematics
Personnel selection represents a two-sided matching problem in which firms compete for qualified candidates by designing job-offer packages. While traditional models assume fully rational agents, real-world decision-makers often face bounded rationality ...

A two-stage approach to the depot shunting driver assignment problem with workload balance considerations. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Due to its environmentally sustainable and energy-saving characteristics, railway transportation nowadays plays a fundamental role in delivering passengers and goods. Emerged in the area of transportation planning, the crew (workforce) sizing problem and

Railway Rolling Stock Planning: Robustness Against Large Disruptions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper we describe a two-stage optimization model for determining robust rolling stock circulations for passenger trains. Here robustness means that the rolling stock circulations can better deal with large disruptions of the railway system.

Recurring Two-Stage Evolutionary Programming: A Novel Approach for Numeric Optimization

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B (Cybernetics), 2011
In the application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to complex problem solving, it is essential to maintain proper balance between global exploration and local exploitation to achieve a good near-optimum solution to the problem. This paper presents a recurring two-stage evolutionary programming (RTEP) to balance the explorative and exploitative ...

Adherence to Protocol Recommendations for Children With Wilms Tumour in Two Consecutive Studies in the United Kingdom and Ireland—Does Variation Matter?

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Wilms tumour (WT) has excellent event‐free and overall survival (OS). However, small differences exist between countries participating in the same international study. This led us to examine variation in adherence to protocol recommendations as a potential contributing factor.

The use of biologically related model (Eclipse) for the intensity-modulated radiation therapy planning of nasopharyngeal carcinomas. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
PURPOSE:Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is the most common treatment technique for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Physical quantities such as dose/dose-volume parameters are used conventionally for IMRT optimization.
