Cochlear-bone wave can yield a hearing sensation as well as otoacoustic emission

open access: yes, 2014
A hearing sensation arises when the elastic basilar membrane inside the cochlea vibrates. The basilar membrane is typically set into motion through airborne sound that displaces the middle ear and induces a pressure difference across the membrane.

Quantifying Soft‐Surgery in Cochlear Implantation: Multimodal Data From 30 International Specialists

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Objective data from 30 specialist cochlear implant surgeons showed that surgical handling strongly influences intracochlear mechanical stress during implantation. Surgeons with fewer than 50 lifetime insertions performed significantly worse than more experienced colleagues, while self‐assessment did not reflect objective performance in any group ...

Comparative Study of Tympanic Membrane Regeneration Therapy for Chronic Otitis Media

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study compared tympanic membrane regeneration therapy (TMRT) with conventional tympanoplasty (CTP) for the treatment of chronic suppurative perforated otitis media (COM). TMRT has many advantages over CTP as a surgical treatment for COM. In particular, significant differences were observed in operative time, hearing improvement, and patient ...

Botulinum toxin therapy: functional silencing of salivary disorders. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxic protein produced by Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic bacterium. BTX therapy is a safe and effective treatment when used for functional silencing of the salivary glands in disorders such as sialoceles and salivary ...

Multi‐Frequency Electrocochleography Results in Fewer Drop Alarms During Cochlear Implant Insertion

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
A novel multi‐frequency electrocochleography (ECochG) algorithm used during cochlear implant electrode insertion is associated with fewer drop alarms and an increase in optimal insertion track patterns. Multi‐frequency ECochG may provide a more accurate assessment of the cochlear microenvironment when compared to single‐frequency ECochG.

FINITE-ELEMENT MODELLING OF THE TYMPANIC MEMBRANE RETRACTION POCKET UNDER NEGATIVE PRESSURE IN THE TYMPANIC CAVITY

open access: yesFacta Universitatis. Series: Mechanical Engineering, 2015
The finite-element calculation of the static stress-strain state of the middle ear was made in this paper. The malleus, incus and stapes models were constructed on the basis of tomographic data.

The Development and Evaluation of a Smartphone-Aided Diagnosis Application to Measure Tympanic Membrane Perforations

open access: yesEar, Nose & Throat Journal
Objectives Chronic otitis media is a long-term infection of the middle ear. It is characterized by persistent discharge from the middle ear through a perforated tympanic membrane.
