Tympanic membrane changes in central tympanic membrane perforations
American Journal of Otolaryngology, 2005The objective of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes in central tympanic membrane perforations caused by chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma.Twenty-nine temporal bones from 25 patients (13 male patients and 12 female patients) with central tympanic membrane perforations-18 chronic otitis media with perforation and 11 chronic

Hernia of the tympanic membrane
Auris Nasus Larynx, 2017Although tympanic bulging is commonly encountered, tympanic herniation occupying the external auditory canal is extremely rare. A 66-year-old man was presented to our hospital with left aural fullness, bilateral hearing loss and otorrhea. Preoperative findings suggested tympanic membrane (TM) hernia located in the left external auditory canal.

Fibroma of the tympanic membrane
American Journal of Otolaryngology, 2009A primary tumor of the tympanic membrane is very rare. Herein, we describe a patient with a thick tympanic membrane that caused progressive hearing loss. The patient was treated with total resection of the tympanic membrane and was diagnosed with fibroma after histopathologic examination. There was no evidence of recurrence 2 years after the operation,

Brain, 1985
Sensation from the tympanic membrane is generally believed to be mediated via at least four cranial nerves, some authors describing discrete territories for each of these nerves. The lack of critical evidence for independent sensory areas prompted a clinical study of tympanic membrane sensation in 32 patients having known cranial nerve deficits ...

Schwannoma of the tympanic membrane
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2006Schwannoma arising from the tympanic membrane is a rare neoplasm. This report describes an external ear canal mass obscuring the tympanic membrane. A transcanal approach identified a tumour adhered to the tympanic membrane. The tumour was excised without myringoplasty. Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma.

Specialized attachments have been designed and produced for the purpose of taking tympanic membrane photographs (Kowa RC 2 Fundus Camera). A doublespeculum technique made it possible to clean the ear canal of wax, hair, and loose canal epithelium through the mounted speculum.

Paraganglioma of the tympanic membrane
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1985Von Haller, in 1743, first described the carotid body and was so impressed with the richness of its innervation that he called it 'ganglion minutum', thinking it to be a sympathetic ganglion. Valentine, in 1840, saw a peculiar structure in the tympanic canaliculus in which a nerve cell was present and called it 'gangliolum tympanicum'. Almost 100 years

Tympanic membrane ossification
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1993Ossification of the tympanic membrane after myringoplasty is recorded for the first time. Myringoplasty was performed for closure of a perforation which followed the surgical treatment of Otitis media with effusion and had included the insertion of a long-term T-tube.
