The Tympanic Membrane

A cough can be caused by a hair lying against the tympanic membrane. To the best of our knowledge, this is documented for the first time by our report of three patients with chronic cough who experienced relief after a hair was removed from the ear drum.

Tympanic membrane perforation may be caused by, e.g., trauma or acute or chronic middle ear infection. Perforation causes conductive hearing loss. Since it predisposes to infections, it is important to keep the ear dry. In most cases traumatic perforations heal spontaneously.
