PERFORATING BURN OF THE TYMPANIC MEMBRANE

ACCIDENTAL burn of the tympanic membrane is uncommon. Recent bibliographic summaries do not mention it. Beck described a case in which the tympanic membrane had been destroyed by pure phenol which was instilled into the ear by a soldier in an attempt to avoid front line service. Recovery was good.

COMPLETE or "pantympanic" perforations denote total loss of the tympanic membrane with the exception of a rim of pars tensa left as a remnant which is actually the annulus of the pars tensa. This perforation usually excludes the pars flaccida of the drum.
