A notion of local $U$-statistic process is introduced and central limit theorems in various norms are obtained for it. This involves the development of several inequalities for $U$-processes that may be useful in other contexts.

Approximations for multivariate U-statistics
AbstractEdgeworth approximations for multivariate U-statistics hold up to the order o(n−12) under moment conditions and the assumption that the projection of the U-statistic to sums of i.i.d. random vectors is strongly nonlattice.

La somme des rangs de Wilcoxon, ses moments, sa distribution nulle, avec illustration et compléments [PDF]
This paper delves into Wilcoxon's sum-of-ranks $R$ statistic (and Mann-Whitney's translated equivalent $U$) for testing the difference between two groups.

A New Method for Detecting Significant p-values with Applications to Genetic Data
A new method for detecting significant p-values is described in this paper. This method, based on the distribution of the m-th order statistic of a U(0,1) distribution, is shown to be suitable in applications where m→∞ independent hypothesis are tested ...

Ranking and Empirical Minimization of U-statistics
The problem of ranking/ordering instances, instead of simply classifying them, has recently gained much attention in machine learning. In this paper we formulate the ranking problem in a rigorous statistical framework. The goal is to learn a ranking rule for deciding, among two instances, which one is "better," with minimum ranking risk.

Effects of chronic browsing on life‐history traits of an irruptive large herbivore population
This study aimed to determine the relationship between diet quality, body mass, and size (hind foot length), and female reproduction and sought to identify the mechanism by which high density under severe food limitations is maintained. Our results demonstrated that sika deer introduced to Nakanoshima Island have maintained high densities through high ...

Moment inequalities for U-statistics
We present moment inequalities for completely degenerate Banach space valued (generalized) U-statistics of arbitrary order. The estimates involve suprema of empirical processes which, in the real-valued case, can be replaced by simpler norms of the kernel matrix (i.e., norms of some multilinear operators associated with the kernel matrix).

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

U-statistic Type Tests for Structural Breaks in Linear Regression Models [PDF]
This article introduces a U-statistic type process that is based on a kernel function which can depend on nuisance parameters. It is shown here that this process can accommodate very easily anti-symmetric kernels very useful for detecting changing ...
