Evaluating commonly used tools to quantify human activity for protected area management

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1692-1704, June 2026.
Abstract Recreation in protected areas (PAs) is growing worldwide, potentially conflicting with wildlife and ecosystem protection. Efficiently estimating human activity in PAs is crucial for balancing a dual mandate of supporting visitor access and biodiversity, but managers lack clear recommendations about the conditions under which specific tools are

Juvenile predation overwhelms nutritional effects on female ungulate fat reserves in a high‐predation system

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1578-1586, June 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ungulate body fat reserves reflect the nutritional environment, often serving as a useful indicator of bottom‐up resource availability. However, body fat reserves also integrate energetic costs associated with avoiding predation risk and reproductive effort, and it is ...

Differentiating Black Bears (Ursus americanus) and Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) Geographically using Linear Measurements of Teeth and Identification of Ursids from Oregon Caves National Monument

open access: yes, 2019
North American black bears (U. americanus) and brown bears (U. arctos) can be difficult to distinguish in the fossil record due to similar dental and skeletal morphologies.

Modeling Functional Connectivity for Bears Among Spawning Salmon Waterways in Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) Territory, Coastal British Columbia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Understanding how functional connectivity can provide mobile consumers access to key resources can inform habitat management. The spatial arrangement of landscape features, for example, can affect movement among resource patches.

Making the most of hard‐won data: Incorporating commonly discarded information from unidentifiable samples improves precision and cost‐effectiveness in wolf population monitoring

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 6, June 2026.
RT‐SCR provides a principled and cost‐effective way to recover information from samples that are usually discarded, improving both precision and the reliability of parameter estimates without extra field or laboratory investment. Gains were strongest for shared ecological parameters, including detection, space use and habitat associations, and are ...

Biological conservation at risk in Slovakia: Brown bears under attack of autocratic pressures

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 6, June 2026.
Recent governance changes in Slovakia have allowed extensive brown bear removals while reducing expert involvement. These developments raise concerns about long‐term management and consistency with EU conservation standards. The case underscores how political context affects conservation outcomes.

Prvi rezultati istraživanja šumskih šteta koje čini smeđi medvjed (Ursus arctos) u šumama obične jele (Abies alba) u Hrvatskoj

open access: yesCroatian Journal of Forest Engineering : Journal for Theory and Application of Forestry Engineering, 2011
The paper analyzes the inventories of trees debarked by the brown bear. Sample plots were established in mixed beech-fir forests in the mountainous part of western Croatia (an area in which such type of damage is relatively frequent). The method of damaging trees is similar to that incurred by the black bear in North America and Japan.
