Anaerobic sewage treatment in a one-stage UASB reactor and a combined UASB-Digester system

Water Research, 2004
The treatment of sewage at 15 degrees C was investigated in a one-stage upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a UASB-Digester system. The latter consists of a UASB reactor complemented with a digester for mutual sewage treatment and sludge stabilisation.

Histological Analysis of Microstructure of UASB Granules

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1994
A histological method was demonstrated for the microscopic analysis of granules from upflow-anaerobic-sludge-blanket (UASB) reactors. Granules were first fixed with formaldehyde and embedded in paraffin, before being sectioned by a microtone to a thickness of 3–5 pm.

UASB Treatment of Wastewater Containing Concentrated Benzoate

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1995
The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process removed 9799% of soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater containing concentrated benzoate at 37C, pH 7.5, a hydraulic retention time ...

Treatment of Brewery Effluent by UASB Process

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1990
A five-month pilot study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process for the treatment of effluent from a brewery in rural China. Results indicate that the process operated at 26°C could reduce over 89% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 92% of five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD\d5) from the ...

Preliminary analysis of Chloroflexi populations in full‐scale UASB methanogenic reactors

Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2018
The phylum Chloroflexi is frequently found in high abundance in methanogenic reactors, but their role is still unclear as most of them remain uncultured and understudied.

High strength sewage treatment in a UASB reactor and an integrated UASB-digester system

Bioresource Technology, 2008
The treatment of high strength sewage was investigated in a one-stage upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a UASB-digester system. The one-stage UASB reactor was operated in Palestine at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10h and at ambient air temperature for a period of more than a year in order to asses the system response to the ...

Technical review on the UASB process

International Journal of Environmental Studies, 1991
This paper presents a comprehensive review of the UASB wastewater treatment process. Factors affecting granulation of the anaerobic sludge, start‐up of the process and operation of UASB reactor are analyzed. Criteria about design and construction of the UASB reactor are described, and studies on mathematical modeling of fluid flow pattern, sludge ...

Performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and other anaerobic reactor configurations for wastewater treatment: a comparative review and critical updates

Journal of Water Supply: Research and Technology. Aqua, 2018
With the rising cost of energy and continuously increasing pressure to be more conscious of the amount of energy used in processes, aerobic wastewater treatment methods are becoming less desirable.

A two-phase anaerobic digestion (UASB-UASB) process: design criteria and optimal system loading capacity

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1995
This research evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of two-phase (separation acid and methanogenic phases) anaerobic digestion of simulated sewage sludge using a UASB-UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) process. Predictive models of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (soluble) removal efficiency and CH4 gas production during loading maximization ...
