Technical and economic feasibility of gradual concentric chambers reactor for sewage treatment in developing countries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A major challenge in developing countries concerning domestic wastewaters is to decrease their treatment costs. In the present study, a new cost-effective reactor called gradual concentric chambers (GCC) was designed and evaluated at lab-scale.

Inoculum selection influences the biochemical methane potential of agro-industrial substrates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Obtaining a reliable estimation of the methane potential of organic waste streams in anaerobic digestion, for which a biochemical methane potential (BMP) test is often used, is of high importance.

Anaerobic Codigestion of Municipal Wastewater, Landfill Leachate, and Crude Glycerin: Process Stability and Methane Yield Assessment Using a Screening Design [PDF]

open access: yesWater Environ Res
Anaerobic codigestion of municipal wastewater with landfill leachate and crude glycerin can achieve near‐theoretical methane yields (0.349 L NCH4/g tCODadd). An optimal mixture of 2% leachate and 1% glycerin was identified, as higher glycerin content negatively impacted performance, highlighting the criticality of substrate balance for energy recovery.

Location and chemical composition of microbially induced phosphorus precipitates in anaerobic and aerobic granular sludge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This work focuses on combined scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) applied to granular sludge used for biological treatment of high-strength wastewater effluents. Mineral precipitation is shown to occur in the core

Use of spray nozzles to recover dissolved methane from an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor effluent

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2022
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and a source of energy. Recovering this gas means lower greenhouse gas emission and potential reduction of energetic costs.

Isolation and characterization of a thermophilic, obligately anaerobic and heterotrophic marine Chloroflexi bacterium from a Chloroflexi dominated microbial community associated with a Japanese shallow hydrothermal system, and proposal for Thermomarinilinea lacunofontalis gen. nov., sp. nov. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A novel marine thermophilic and heterotrophic Anaerolineae bacterium in the phylum Chloroflexi, strain SW7T, was isolated from an in situ colonization system deployed in the main hydrothermal vent of the Taketomi submarine hot spring field located on the
