Evaluation of udder health and mastitis in llamas

Abstract The aim of this paper was studying the phenotypic and genetic relationships between udder morphology traits and udder health in dairy sheep. From 2000 to 2008 udder traits, somatic cell count (SCC) and clinical mastitis cases were recorded in an experimental flock consisting each year of around 900 ewes.

Using Diagnostic Microbiology to Improve Udder Health

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice
Microbiology has been a mainstay of mastitis diagnostics for over 100 years. Newer techniques, including PCR and matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight, are valuable tools for diagnosing mastitis pathogens. Microbiology is the only practical method for determining treatment of individual cows for most farms.
