Joining of UHTC Composites Using Metallic Interlayer
Ultra-high temperatures ceramics (UHTCs) are the subject of intense worldwide research effort, and their stability in severe environments makes them candidates for aerospace, nuclear and solar energy applications. Widespread usage UHTCs requires the development of effective and reliable joining methods that facilitate the fabrication of large, complex ...Noritaka Saito +4 more

The importance of TEM analysis for UHTC development
2019Sintering is a crucial step for structural ceramics as it leads to the elimination of porosity and hence to the achievement of high thermo-mechanical performances. The class of materials known as ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) requires a combination of severe consolidation process, such high temperature above 2000°C and the application of ...

Characterization of UHTCs containing various kinds of fibers
2014Different kinds of fibers, such as carbon or silicon carbide, were added to UHTC matrices to improve the fracture toughness. Several sintering additives were chosen for the densification (ZrSi2, Si3N4 and TaSi2) using various sintering cycles to identify the best temperature allowing densification of the matrix and minimal fiber degradation.

Fabrication and characterization of fibre reinforced UHTC composites
2019The thermal, chemical and mechanical environments typical of aero-propulsion applications, such as those characteristic of combustion chambers of high performance propulsion engines, introduce many problems from the point of view of materials. Next generation propellants have become more energetic, resulting in higher temperatures and very hostile ...

Sharp UHTC leading edges composites for hypersonic applications
2012Hypersonic vehicles need sharp leading edges to enable vehicle manoeuvrability during atmospheric exit and re-entry. The edges are expected being hit with corrosive plasmas from atmosphere at ablative speeds with temperatures inexcess of 2000°C. Such extreme conditions limit the field of material candidates to ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs ...

Fabrication and plasma wind tunnel testing of UHTC structures
2011The ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are currently the most studied key enabling technology for thermal protection structures (TPS) like wing leading edges, surface control components to be applied in the next generations of space vehicles flying at hypersonic speed or/and re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.

Sharp composite UHTC leading edges for hypersonic applications
2012Borides of early transition metals are considered very promising materials for several applications, the most appealing one being currently in the aerospace. The present contribution deals with two UHTC ZrB2-based materials reinforced, respectively, with SiC in form of chopped fibre or fine particulate.
