Chapman Conference on Magnetospheric ULF Waves [PDF]

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 2005
Waves in the ultra‐low‐frequency (ULF) band (periods of 1 to 1000 s) are a permanent feature in the region called the magnetosphere, where the behavior of charged particles is influenced by the Earth's intrinsic magnetic field. These waves transport momentum and energy from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and farther down to the ionosphere.

On the Close Correspondence Between Storm Time ULF Wave Power and the POES VLF Chorus Wave Amplitude Proxy

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2019
Ground‐based Pc5 ultralow frequency (ULF) wave power in multiple ground‐based meridians is compared to the very low frequency (VLF) wave amplitude proxy, derived from Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) precipitation, for the 33 storms ...

The influence of solar wind variability on magnetospheric ULF wave power

open access: yes, 2015
Magnetospheric ultra-low frequency (ULF) oscillations in the Pc 4–5 frequency range play an important role in the dynamics of Earth's radiation belts, both by enhancing the radial diffusion through incoherent interactions and through the coherent drift ...

Ultra-Low Frequency Waves of Foreshock Origin Upstream and Inside of the Magnetospheres of Earth, Mercury, and Saturn Related to Solar Wind–Magnetosphere Coupling

open access: yesUniverse
This review examines ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves across different planetary environments, focusing on Earth, Mercury, and Saturn. Data from spacecraft missions (CHAMP, Swarm, and Oersted for Earth; MESSENGER for Mercury; and Cassini for Saturn ...

Magnetospheric Multiscale Observations of Earth's Oblique Bow Shock Reformation by Foreshock Ultralow‐Frequency Waves

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2021
Collisionless shocks can be nonstationary with periodic reformation shown in many simulation results, but direct observations are still tenuous and difficult to conclusively interpret. In this study, using Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations, we

Detection and Energy Dissipation of ULF Waves in the Polar Ionosphere: A Case Study Using the EISCAT Radar

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics
Ultra‐low frequency (ULF) waves transfer energy and momentum into the ionosphere‐thermosphere system. To quantify this energy, this paper first presents a new method to quantitatively detect ULF waves in Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) data based on 2D ...

The use of the Poynting vector in interpreting ULF waves in magnetospheric waveguides

open access: yes, 2015
T.E. would like to thank STFC for financial support for a doctoral training grant. Date of Acceptance: 04/12/2014We numerically model ultralow frequency (ULF) waves in the magnetosphere assuming an ideal, low-beta inhomogeneous plasma waveguide.

Frequency‐Dependent Responses of Plasmaspheric Hiss to the Impact of an Interplanetary Shock

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2021
Plasmaspheric hiss waves are essential for the pitch‐angle scattering and precipitation of energetic electrons and interplanetary shocks may affect these waves.

Numerical study of the generation and propagation of ultralow-frequency waves by artificial ionospheric F region modulation at different latitudes [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2016
Powerful high-frequency (HF) radio waves can be used to efficiently modify the upper-ionospheric plasmas of the F region. The pressure gradient induced by modulated electron heating at ultralow-frequency (ULF) drives a local oscillating diamagnetic ...

Magnetospheric ULF Wave Phenomena Stimulated by SSC.

open access: yesJournal of geomagnetism and geoelectricity, 1997
Several ssc were recorded simultaneously at the low-latitude longitudinal and along the 210° magnetic meridian networks. The considered ULF wave phenomena stimulated by the ssc comprise main and preliminary impulses, Psc 3 pulsations, ssc-related Pc 3 and cavity-like oscillations. The analysis of observed ssc shows that the preliminary impulse is still
